However, the experiment did not work. Foden struggled to influence the game and failed to register a shot or create a chance. He was substituted in the second half as England searched for a response. England’s recent results have exposed attacking issues. The team failed to win either of their March fixtures. More concerning, they have yet to beat a top 20 ranked side under Tuchel.
Against Japan, England lacked creativity and cutting edge. The absence of Kane was evident, with the team missing a focal point in attack. Tuchel’s decision to use Foden centrally was bold but ultimately ineffective.
The manager stressed that attacking players must deliver tangible output. Goals, assists and chances created are essential at this level. England simply did not produce enough in those areas.
The defining moment that could have dealt a death blow to Foden’s World Cup chances came during the Japan defeat. Foden’s quiet display contrasted sharply with expectations placed on him. It was a missed opportunity to shine and secure his place ahead of the squad deadline.
