Andrea Pirlo has issued a public statement after the controversy surrounding his commercial partnership with a Russian betting company overshadowed his chances of becoming Italy's next head coach.
The 2006 World Cup winner had emerged as the leading candidate for the national team job after Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola declined the role. However, the debate surrounding his association with Fonbet has complicated his prospects, prompting Pirlo to address the situation through his social media channels.

Pirlo explained that he had deliberately remained silent out of respect for the institutions, the Italian Football Federation, and everyone involved in the coaching selection process.
He said he felt it was necessary to clarify the situation after seeing the public debate surrounding his name, stressing that throughout his career as both a player and a coach he had always acted in accordance with the laws of the countries where he worked and the contracts he signed.
The former midfielder also insisted that the controversy had transformed what should have been a sporting decision into a public discussion that attributed intentions and beliefs to him that he said did not reflect his views.
Fonbet partnership sparks controversy
The controversy centred on Pirlo's role as a global brand ambassador for Russian betting company Fonbet, including his attendance at a company event in Moscow in May 2026.
Pirlo stated that the commercial partnership originated during his coaching experience in the United Arab Emirates and described it as being exclusively sporting and commercial in nature.
He also rejected any political interpretation of the agreement, saying that assigning political meaning to the collaboration meant attributing convictions to him that he had never expressed and did not hold.
