Although Chelsea comfortably defeated their A-League opponents at Accor Stadium, Alonso admitted his team was still adapting after long-distance travel. Beyond Joao Pedro’s display, several academy players also caught the eye as the Spaniard took his first look at the squad.

Joao Pedro delivered the standout performance of the evening by scoring a hat-trick in just nine minutes. The Brazil forward helped Chelsea claim a 6-4 victory and earned praise from Alonso, who described him as "very, very hungry" and determined to enjoy a strong season.
The striker’s display came after he was left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad. His finishing, pace, and power stood out in a match that also underlined the difference in quality between Premier League and A-League opposition.
Chelsea’s performance was far from flawless, however. Alonso’s side looked sloppy at times as they continued to deal with the effects of jet lag, leaving Joao Pedro as the clear standout performer.
Dastan Satpaev impresses while Liam Delap faces uncertainty
Seventeen-year-old Dastan Satpaev scored the first goal of Alonso’s reign after only six minutes, producing a spectacular finish. The Kazakhstan forward featured as a triallist because he cannot officially complete his transfer from FC Kairat until 12 August.
Alonso said he already knew Satpaev from Almaty and praised his ability to threaten defenders, attack central areas, and combine pace with strength. The Chelsea manager added that he had been impressed by the teenager’s performances.
In contrast, Liam Delap endured another difficult outing. The striker has struggled in most of his appearances since joining Chelsea from Ipswich, and his future has become uncertain as the club advances talks to sign Danny Welbeck. Personal terms have reportedly been agreed with the Brighton forward, while Chelsea are also negotiating with Brentford over Jordan Henderson as they seek greater experience and leadership.

Asked about the pursuit of Welbeck and Henderson, Alonso explained that Chelsea need greater balance to build a complete squad. He stressed that the club has a clear plan for strengthening the team.
Chelsea still have Emmanuel Emegha and Nicolas Jackson among their attacking options, although both were unavailable for the match. Alonso indicated that decisions regarding the squad would continue as preparations for the new season progress.
The manager also suggested Satpaev’s immediate future has yet to be decided, with discussions still to take place before determining whether the teenager remains with Chelsea or heads elsewhere.
Chelsea youngsters adapt to Alonso’s system
Alonso began his Chelsea tenure using the 4-2-3-1 formation previously favoured by Enzo Maresca. With several senior players still absent after the World Cup, including club-record signing Morgan Rogers, a number of academy prospects were handed opportunities.
Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, Reggie Walsh, and Reggie Watson all impressed in midfield, with Watson completing the entire match. Alonso had already expressed surprise before kick-off at how well seven academy players drafted into first-team training had adapted.
Landon Emenalo was also given valuable minutes because of Chelsea’s lack of available left-backs, while winger Jamie Gittens continued his productive pre-season by scoring his third goal in three appearances. His performances, together with the emergence of several young players, offered encouraging signs during Alonso’s opening game in charge.
