The 22-year-old was one of the standout figures in Leipzig, yet he will not travel with England this summer after Tuchel selected midfielders including Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson, Kobbie Mainoo, Jordan Henderson, Eberechi Eze, Jude Bellingham, and Morgan Rogers instead.
Former England midfielder Glenn Hoddle admitted he was surprised by the omission before the final and praised Wharton’s ability to play forward quickly from deep positions. Hoddle highlighted the midfielder’s range of passing and his capacity to break defensive lines with a single ball, suggesting England lacked many players capable of doing it consistently.
After the match, Hoddle again backed Wharton’s credentials, calling him a “wonderful footballer” and insisting he was good enough for the national side.
