Aston Villa secured their return to the Champions League after a commanding 4-2 victory over Liverpool on Friday, confirming a top-four finish in the Premier League. The achievement came a year after Villa narrowly missed qualification on the final day of the previous campaign, when defeat at Manchester United and the dismissal of Emiliano Martínez proved costly following a controversial refereeing decision that denied Morgan Rogers an early goal.
This season, however, Unai Emery’s team responded in emphatic fashion. Villa moved ahead of Liverpool into fourth place and also ensured Bournemouth could no longer catch them. Having occupied Champions League positions since November, the club completed one of the most remarkable campaigns in the division.
Attention now switches to the Europa League final against Freiburg in Istanbul on Wednesday. Reaching a first major European final since lifting the European Cup in 1982 has added further significance to a season that has already exceeded most expectations.
Despite their success, statistical models suggest Villa should be nowhere near the Champions League places. According to Opta’s expected table, Emery’s side would rank only 12th, making them the league’s biggest overachievers by a distance.
Villa’s attacking statistics do not resemble those of a typical top-four side. Their 54 league goals place them seventh in the division, while their total shots and efforts on target are both outside the top six. Chelsea, Brighton, and Newcastle all rank above them in several attacking categories.
What has separated Villa from many rivals has been efficiency. Their shot conversion rate of 11% is among the strongest in the league, surpassed only by Brentford, Manchester City, and Arsenal. Tottenham are the only club to have exceeded their expected goals tally by a greater margin.
Villa has scored 7.58 goals more than their xG total of 46.42, despite producing the lowest expected goals figure among the teams around the Champions League places. Defensively, only four clubs have outperformed their expected goals-against record.
Another striking feature of Villa’s campaign has been their success from long range. Fifteen of their goals have come from outside the penalty area, accounting for 28% of their total tally. Bournemouth and Fulham are the only other sides with more than 20% of their goals arriving from distance.
Curiously, Villa has struggled when presented with clearer opportunities. They have converted only 29% of their big chances, the weakest rate in the Premier League, despite creating 84 such openings during the campaign.
Balancing domestic competition with European football has been another challenge Villa have managed successfully. Emery repeatedly dismissed the idea that Thursday fixtures in Europe should excuse poor league performances, insisting the squad had maintained its objectives throughout the season.
The Villa manager has spoken about building a team capable of competing with the strongest clubs in England and Europe while remaining realistic about the club’s financial capacity. Over the past three years, Villa has steadily improved under his leadership and consistently remained competitive on multiple fronts.
That progress has been achieved while operating under financial limitations. Since Emery arrived in 2022, Villa’s net spend of £73.5m has been lower than that of Wolves, Brentford, Brighton, and Everton. The club has had to carefully manage its finances in order to comply with profit and sustainability regulations.
Last summer highlighted those pressures. While Villa celebrated Champions League qualification in May 2024, Emery and football operations chief Damian Vidagany were already concerned about avoiding a breach of PSR rules. The club eventually completed the £43m sale of Douglas Luiz to Juventus, while Jacob Ramsey later joined Newcastle in a £40m transfer.
Villa may once again need to sacrifice a key player this summer. Morgan Rogers has flourished since arriving from Middlesbrough for £16m two years ago, and a strong World Cup with England could significantly increase his market value.
Qualifying for the Champions League again strengthens Villa’s position financially, yet selling players remains one of the simplest ways for the club to satisfy financial requirements. The importance of European qualification is reflected in the club’s accounts, with Villa posting a £17m profit for 2024-25 after recording losses close to £90m the previous year and £120m in 2022-23.
Efforts to increase revenue have become central to Villa’s strategy. Matchday income has grown as overall revenue climbed to £378m, although rising ticket prices have frustrated sections of the fanbase. Redevelopment work on the North Stand is expected to raise Villa Park’s capacity beyond 50,000 by the end of next year, while the new Warehouse entertainment venue has already been completed.
Even so, Villa has occasionally struggled to compete financially with rivals in the transfer market. Their pursuit of Conor Gallagher ultimately failed because Tottenham were able to complete a deal for the Atletico Madrid midfielder.
The club has also voiced frustration over differing financial regulations between the Premier League and UEFA. England’s top division will introduce a squad-cost ratio system next season that permits clubs to spend 85% of revenue on player costs, while UEFA's limit remains at 70%. Vidagany has argued that football requires regulation but believes the domestic and European systems do not align effectively.
For much of the season Villa have operated cautiously in the market, yet securing Champions League football for the second time in three years could finally provide greater freedom moving forward.
