Arsenal moved a step nearer to winning the Premier League title after defeating Burnley 1-0 at Emirates Stadium. Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the contest, giving Mikel Arteta’s side a crucial victory in the closing stage of the campaign.

The home side controlled much of the encounter and pushed forward from the opening whistle with an attacking lineup that included Havertz, Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, and Eberechi Eze. Arsenal looked dangerous throughout the first half and almost opened the scoring earlier when Leandro Trossard struck the post with a powerful effort.

Saka also caused problems on the flank, beating Lucas Pires before sending a low delivery across the face of goal. Burnley managed to hold on until the 37th minute, when Havertz connected with another Saka corner to head Arsenal into the lead.

The result leaves Arsenal five points ahead of Manchester City, although Pep Guardiola’s team still have two matches remaining and face Bournemouth on Tuesday.

The title race pressure shifts towards Manchester City

The victory increased the pressure on City, who now know that any dropped points against Bournemouth would hand Arsenal the championship. Even if City wins, Arsenal would still secure the title by beating Crystal Palace in their final league fixture.

Ahead of the match, Arsenal supporters displayed a banner reading “three games to make history”, referring to the final two Premier League matches and the upcoming Champions League final against Paris St-Germain in Budapest on 30 May.

Arteta once again trusted his instincts with team selection, opting for an attack-minded approach against the relegated visitors. Arsenal dominated possession for long periods and played with the confidence of a side sensing a major achievement was close.

With only one league match remaining and momentum continuing to build, the North London club is now in position to end a 22-year wait for the Premier League crown.

Havertz avoids dismissal during tense second half

Although Havertz became the match winner, he was also involved in one of the evening’s most controversial moments. The Arsenal forward received a yellow card following a late challenge on Lesley Ugochukwu.

The incident was checked by the video assistant referee, but officials decided not to upgrade the punishment to a red card, allowing Havertz to remain on the pitch.

Arsenal continued to press for another goal after the break, while Burnley attempted to threaten on the counterattack. Despite a few nervous moments, the hosts protected their advantage and secured another important three points in the title race.

The win also maintained the strong atmosphere surrounding the club as they continue fighting on both domestic and European fronts.

Burnley unable to avoid another defeat

Burnley arrived in London already relegated and facing another difficult challenge in a disappointing campaign. The Clarets have spent months near the bottom of the table and recently lost manager Scott Parker, leaving the club without a permanent head coach.

Their struggles have continued throughout the season, with only one win in the previous 27 league matches and just two away victories overall. Despite those problems, Burnley still showed flashes of quality during the game.

Loum Tchaouna produced one of the visitors’ best moments when his cross created a chance for Hannibal Mejbri, who failed to convert. Jaidon Anthony also threatened with his pace on the wing and later sent a curling effort over the crossbar in the second half.

Burnley earned promotion with a 100-point Championship season last time around, and the club will now hope for another quick return to the Premier League after failing to secure survival this year.
