West Ham’s fight for Premier League survival suffered a major setback after a 3-0 defeat to Brentford. The Hammers remain just two points above the drop zone. Brentford, meanwhile, climbed into sixth and reignited their push for European football.
The game began at a frantic pace, with both sides creating early chances. Brentford threatened through Dango Ouattara, while West Ham responded quickly on the counter. The hosts took the lead in the 15th minute in unusual fashion.
A cross into the box caused confusion, and Konstantinos Mavropanos attempted to clear. Instead, the ball struck the woodwork and bounced over the line off him. It was a cruel moment for the defender, who had little time to react.
West Ham tried to respond immediately and came close to equalising. Valentin Castellanos struck the post with a low effort before seeing another attempt hit the woodwork. The visitors also had a goal ruled out for offside, denying Mavropanos a quick redemption.
The first half remained open, with chances at both ends. Brentford nearly doubled their lead when Mikkel Damsgaard fired wide at an open goal. Igor Thiago also had an opportunity but failed to trouble the goalkeeper.
West Ham continued to push and created several dangerous moments. Castellanos hit the post again from a header, while a long-range strike was tipped over late in the half. Despite their attacking intent, they went into the break trailing 1-0.
West Ham’s hopes of a comeback took a hit early in the second half. El Hadji Malick Diouf brought down Ouattara inside the area with a rash challenge. The referee pointed to the spot without hesitation. Thiago stepped up and converted calmly in the 54th minute. He sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 2-0. That goal gave Brentford control and forced West Ham to chase the game.
The visitors pushed forward but struggled to break down a more composed Brentford side. Their frustration grew as another effort struck the woodwork, this time from Crysencio Summerville.
As West Ham committed bodies forward, spaces opened at the back. Brentford took full advantage late in the game. Damsgaard finished neatly in the 82nd minute after a well-worked move. That third goal sealed the result and capped a strong second-half display. Brentford managed the closing stages comfortably and saw out the win with little trouble.
Brentford finished with 14 shots and an expected goals figure of around 2.27. West Ham registered 13 attempts but had a lower xG of 0.92. The visitors hit the woodwork four times and failed to convert key chances.
Possession was fairly even, with Brentford holding a slight edge at around 52 percent. The hosts were more clinical, recording six shots on target compared to West Ham’s four. Thiago’s penalty also marked his 22nd league goal of the season.
The own goal proved decisive in shifting early momentum. Castellanos’ missed chances defined West Ham’s afternoon in front of goal. Thiago’s penalty provided control, while Damsgaard’s finish ended any hopes of a comeback. Ouattara caused constant problems with his pace and movement. Guile and composure in midfield allowed Brentford to dictate the second half. West Ham, in contrast, lacked sharpness in both boxes.
Brentford travel to face Manchester City next as they continue their push for Europe. West Ham return home to take on Arsenal in a crucial clash. With three games remaining, the Hammers must respond quickly to avoid relegation danger.
