Pochettino saddened by Tottenham’s battle near the bottom

Mauricio Pochettino has admitted he feels deep sadness watching Tottenham struggle near the foot of the Premier League table. The former manager, who led Spurs between 2014 and 2019, said the club remains hugely important to him and that seeing both supporters and people inside the organisation suffer is painful.

Speaking on The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast, the Argentine explained that Tottenham will always hold a major place in both his professional journey and personal life. Because of that connection, he said the current situation is hard for him to accept.

A strong emotional bond with North London side remains

Pochettino guided Tottenham to the Champions League final before being dismissed after a difficult opening to the following campaign. Even after moves to Paris St-Germain, Chelsea, and now his role with the United States national team ahead of this summer’s World Cup, his attachment to Spurs has clearly not faded.

He openly stated his love for the club and suggested that a return to English football could happen in the future. Pochettino said he believes his personality and coaching style are well suited to the Premier League.

Tottenham fighting for survival

Spurs currently sit 18th in the standings, two points away from safety with only four matches left. Their victory against already-relegated Wolves last weekend ended a long wait for a league win, as it was their first in the competition this calendar year.

The challenge remains severe, with a trip to Aston Villa coming next as Tottenham attempt to escape the relegation zone.

Injury setbacks add to Spurs’ problems

Tottenham’s survival hopes have also been hit by fitness issues. Midfielder Xavi Simons will miss the rest of the campaign after sustaining a knee injury during the Wolves match.

Forward Dominic Solanke was also forced off in that game, adding another concern as the team prepares for the crucial closing weeks of the season.
