Morgan Gibbs-White scores a stunning hat-trick as Nottingham Forest beat Burnley 4-1 to boost survival hopes and leave the visitors near relegation.
Nottingham Forest produced a stunning second-half turnaround to beat Burnley 4-1 at the City Ground. Morgan Gibbs-White inspired the comeback with a brilliant hat-trick. The result moves Forest five points clear of the relegation zone with five games left.
The hosts started slowly and struggled to create clear chances in the first half. Burnley looked more composed and carried a greater attacking threat throughout that period. Forest lacked intensity and rhythm, with their attacking play often breaking down too easily. The home crowd grew restless as the half progressed.
Burnley took the lead deep into first-half stoppage time through Zian Flemming. The forward converted a low cross from Quilindschy Hartman after a defensive lapse. It was a deserved goal based on the visitors’ first-half performance.
Forest had offered little going forward before the break, registering just one shot on target. Burnley managed four shots in the opening half and controlled key phases of play. Possession was fairly even, but Burnley were sharper in decisive moments. Forest went into the interval needing a strong response.
Forest emerged with greater urgency in the second half and began to push Burnley deeper. Their persistence paid off in the 62nd minute when Gibbs-White equalised from close range. The midfielder showed composure to finish after reacting quickest inside the box.
Just seven minutes later, he struck again to turn the game around. Omari Hutchinson delivered a cross which Gibbs-White met with a controlled volley. The goal lifted the atmosphere and shifted momentum completely in Forest’s favour.
Gibbs-White completed his hat-trick in the 77th minute with a looping header. Ryan Yates provided the assist with a well-placed cross into the area. It marked the midfielder’s first career hat-trick and capped a remarkable 15-minute spell. He becomes only the third player to score a hat-trick for Forest in the Premier League, after Kevin Campbell and Chris Wood.
Burnley struggled to recover after conceding twice in quick succession. Their defensive structure collapsed as Forest continued to press forward. Substitute Igor Jesus added a fourth goal deep into stoppage time to seal the win.
Jesus finished calmly after being played through on goal by Nicolas Dominguez. Forest ended the match with four goals from limited shots on target, highlighting their efficiency. They also generated more momentum after the break, finishing with a higher expected goals tally.
Gibbs-White was the clear difference, scoring three goals from five attempts. He also led by example during Forest’s strongest spell. Hutchinson and Yates played key supporting roles with assists in crucial moments.
For Burnley, Flemming impressed again with his eighth away goal of the season. However, the visitors faded badly in the final half hour. Their inability to respond after conceding proved costly once again.
Forest scored four goals from their shots on target, showing clinical finishing. Burnley managed fewer attempts overall and struggled after the interval. Forest’s expected goals stood around 1.19, while Burnley’s was significantly lower at just 0.36 xG. Possession remained balanced, but the hosts dominated key phases late on.
Nottingham Forest travel to Sunderland next Friday in the Premier League. They then face Aston Villa in the Europa League semi-final first leg on April 30. Burnley host Manchester City next before travelling to Leeds, with relegation looming.
