Former Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz has been named the new head coach of Ghana as preparations intensify for the upcoming World Cup. The Portuguese tactician, aged 73, replaces Otto Addo, who was dismissed on 31 March following friendly losses against Germany and Austria.

Ghana’s struggles under Addo extended beyond those defeats, as the team also missed out on qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The decision to make a change comes as the Black Stars look to reset ahead of a major international tournament.

Queiroz brings extensive experience to the role, having worked under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United during two separate periods between 2002 and 2008, with a spell as Real Madrid head coach in between.

Extensive international experience and recent role

The newly appointed Ghana boss most recently managed Oman, leaving the position last month after the team failed to secure a place at the World Cup. Despite that setback, his long managerial career includes leading multiple national teams across different continents.

Queiroz guided Portugal to the knockout stage of the 2010 World Cup and has taken charge of Iran in three consecutive editions of the tournament. His résumé also includes coaching roles with Egypt, Japan, Colombia, and South Africa, as well as an earlier stint in charge of Portugal during the early 1990s.

Speaking after his appointment, Queiroz expressed enthusiasm for the new role, emphasizing both his dedication and respect for Ghana’s footballing heritage. He highlighted the country’s talent and expressed confidence in what lies ahead.

Ghana’s World Cup path and early fixtures

Ghana has been placed in Group L for the tournament and will begin their campaign against Panama on 17 June. This will be followed by matches against England on 23 June and Croatia on 27 June.

The competition will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, providing a major stage for the Black Stars as they aim to make an impact under new leadership.

With a demanding group and renewed direction from the bench, Ghana will look to turn recent disappointments into a stronger showing on the global stage.
