Robertson to depart Liverpool after nine-year spell

Andy Robertson will leave Liverpool at the end of the season when his contract runs out, bringing an end to a highly successful period on Merseyside. The 32-year-old defender, who arrived from Hull City in 2017 for £8m, confirmed his decision in a video message, explaining that he feels the moment is right to begin a new chapter.

Reflecting on his time at the club, Robertson said he would look back on nearly a decade with great satisfaction. During his stay, he helped the team secure major honours, including two Premier League titles and the Champions League, while becoming a key figure in one of the club’s most successful eras.

He also expressed deep gratitude toward the supporters and everyone connected with the club, stressing that he intends to give his full commitment until his final appearance. Robertson added that a more emotional farewell would come later, as he is not yet ready to fully say goodbye.

Reduced role and transfer interest

Robertson’s involvement has diminished this season under head coach Arne Slot, following the arrival of Hungarian left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth in a £40m deal. The Scotland captain has started only six league matches, spending more time among the substitutes.

A potential move to Tottenham Hotspur was discussed during the January transfer window, with an agreement in principle reportedly reached. However, the transfer did not go through because Liverpool were unable to bring back Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma.

Despite limited minutes, Robertson maintained that he hopes fans remain proud of his performances whenever he takes the field. Over his Liverpool career, he has made 373 appearances and collected nine trophies, underlining his importance to the squad across multiple seasons.

End of an era alongside key teammates

Robertson’s exit follows the announcement that Mohamed Salah will also leave the club this summer. Both players arrived in the same transfer window and played central roles in Liverpool’s resurgence, contributing significantly to their domestic and European success.

Salah paid tribute to his teammate on social media, describing it as an honour to share the pitch and highlighting Robertson’s achievements, calling him a legend of the club. Another long-time teammate, Trent Alexander-Arnold, had already departed for Real Madrid the previous summer, marking a broader transition within the squad.

Statistically, Robertson ranks among the most creative defenders in the league, registering 56 assists since the 2017-18 campaign, placing him sixth overall in that period. Alexander-Arnold and Salah sit above him in that ranking, emphasizing the attacking output of Liverpool’s core players during those years.

Future prospects and international role

Former Scotland international Pat Nevin believes Robertson still has much to offer and should not remain a backup option. Speaking about the defender’s situation, he suggested that another team could benefit from giving him regular playing time, as he remains capable of featuring in 30 to 40 matches per season.

Nevin also highlighted Robertson’s professionalism and character, noting that he is widely respected across the game. According to him, the full-back’s attitude and consistency make him an asset for any club that signs him.

Looking ahead, Robertson is set to captain Scotland's national team at the upcoming World Cup, marking the country’s first appearance at the tournament since 1998. As he approaches the next stage of his career, the focus will be on continuing to play regularly and making the most of the remaining years at the top level.
