The home side took the lead through Frank Onyeka, who marked his first goal for the club in style. However, Derby responded strongly, with Ben Brereton Diaz equalising twice during the contest to keep his side in contention.
Despite Derby’s resilience, Coventry maintained their push, with Rudoni ultimately delivering the decisive moment. His late strike secured another important win, extending the team’s advantage at the top of the Championship and continuing their impressive run of eight victories from nine matches.
Coventry’s opening goal stemmed from Onyeka’s determination, as he regained possession before combining with Romain Esse and finishing with a precise curling effort into the top corner. Derby refused to falter and drew level before the interval when Matt Clarke delivered a cross that evaded goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, allowing Brereton Diaz to head home.
The visitors nearly went ahead in stoppage time of the first half, but Rushworth produced an excellent save to deny Jaydon Banel. Coventry improved after the break, forcing Richard O'Donnell into an important stop after Josh Eccles was played through following a misplaced pass from Joe Ward.
Manager Frank Lampard introduced Rudoni as part of a triple change, and the midfielder made an immediate impact by calmly adjusting onto his left foot to score shortly after entering the field. Derby responded once more when referee Tom Nield awarded a penalty, judging that Rushworth had fouled Brereton Diaz, who converted to make it 2–2.
Coventry showed strong resolve to reclaim the lead yet again. Milan van Ewijk provided the assist with a cross that Rudoni met at the near post, finishing confidently to secure his second goal of the match and his seventh of the season.
The result strengthened Coventry’s position, placing them well clear of rivals such as Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town, although Ipswich still have games in hand. Meanwhile, Derby remains just outside the playoff positions with six fixtures remaining, also dealing with the loss of Rhian Brewster for the rest of the campaign following knee surgery.
After the match, Lampard praised his team’s effort, describing the performance as both demanding and rewarding. He highlighted Rudoni’s impact, noting not only his ability but also his determination to contribute, and expressed particular admiration for both of his goals, calling one exceptional and the other a composed finish.
