In response to the situation, a message was displayed inside the stadium at half-time warning supporters against discriminatory language. The announcement appeared again shortly after the restart, though it was met with whistles from parts of the audience, highlighting a divided reaction among those present.
Yamal addressed the issue publicly, noting that while the chants were aimed at the opposing side rather than himself personally, they still crossed a line. As a practising Muslim, he stressed that using religion in such a way is deeply disrespectful and should not be tolerated in football or society.
The Spanish Football Federation also issued a statement condemning the behavior, reaffirming its stance against racism and any form of violence in football stadiums. Officials emphasized that such conduct has no place in the sport and must be addressed firmly.
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente echoed those sentiments, labeling the chants as unacceptable. He argued that individuals who engage in such actions misuse football as a platform and should be identified and excluded from the sport and wider society.
Yamal reinforced this message, stating that football should remain a space for enjoyment and support rather than a stage for discrimination. He added that targeting individuals or groups based on beliefs or identity reflects ignorance and racism.
The friendly match had originally been scheduled to take place in Qatar but was relocated to Espanyol’s home ground due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Spain entered the game following a 3-0 victory over Serbia, with Yamal the only player retained in the starting lineup after the coach made 10 changes.
Egypt, meanwhile, were missing forward Mohamed Salah due to injury. Despite the goalless result, the outcome had broader consequences, as Spain relinquished their position at the top of the world rankings.
Yamal, making his 26th appearance for the national team, continues to play a significant role for Spain, having already contributed to their European Championship triumph in 2024.
