Foden faces uncertainty over World Cup place after Tuchel comments

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has indicated that Phil Foden’s place in the upcoming World Cup squad is far from certain. Although the Manchester City midfielder featured in both matches during the team’s final training camp before squad selection, his performances have not secured him a guaranteed spot.

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has indicated that Phil Foden’s place in the upcoming World Cup squad is far from certain. Although the Manchester City midfielder featured in both matches during the team’s final training camp before squad selection, his performances have not secured him a guaranteed spot.

Tuchel highlighted a contrast between Foden’s training form and his match contributions. The 25-year-old reportedly impressed during sessions, showing energy and confidence, but struggled to translate that level onto the pitch. The manager admitted he expected Foden to replicate his training quality in games, yet that impact did not materialize.

The situation has been influenced by Foden’s recent lack of playing time at club level. Having started only four of Manchester City’s last 15 matches, he arrived in camp short of match rhythm. Despite his positive attitude and strong preparation, Tuchel suggested that performances in competitive fixtures remain the key factor in selection decisions.

Experiment in attack fails to deliver

Foden was deployed in an unfamiliar false nine role during England’s defeat to Japan, stepping in to cover for the absence of striker Harry Kane. However, the experiment proved ineffective, with the midfielder unable to make a significant impression in the attacking position.

As the match progressed, Tuchel opted to make a change, introducing Dominic Solanke in the 59th minute. The substitution underlined the lack of attacking influence in Foden’s performance and raised further questions about his suitability in that role.

The England manager’s post-match comments reflected these concerns, acknowledging that while Foden possesses clear ability, his recent displays have not been decisive enough. Tuchel openly stated that inclusion in the World Cup squad is not assured, reinforcing the competitive nature of selection.

Time running out before final squad decision

England must finalize their 24-man squad by 30 May, with their World Cup campaign set to begin against Croatia on 17 June in Arlington, Texas. With the deadline approaching, players are under increasing pressure to prove their form and consistency.

Foden’s recent goal drought adds to the uncertainty. He has not found the net since 14 December, when he concluded a productive spell that saw him score six times in five matches. Since then, both limited opportunities and reduced output have affected his standing.

As Tuchel prepares to make his final decisions, Foden remains in contention but without any guarantees. His performances in the remaining period will be crucial if he is to secure a place in England’s squad for the tournament.
