Romania national team head coach Mircea Lucescu was admitted to hospital on Sunday shortly before a planned training session. The Romanian Football Federation confirmed that the 80-year-old began feeling unwell ahead of the team’s final practice before traveling for an upcoming friendly match.
Medical staff initially treated Lucescu on site before emergency responders arrived. Following the incident, the scheduled training session was called off as a precaution.
According to the federation, Lucescu underwent examinations related to heart arrhythmia after being taken to the hospital. Officials stated that he was in a stable condition upon arrival and remained under medical supervision for further testing.
The situation arose just as Romania was preparing for its trip to face Slovakia in a friendly scheduled for Tuesday. Efforts were reportedly made to call off the match, but these attempts were unsuccessful.
In Lucescu’s absence, assistant coach Ionel Gane, a former international player, will take charge of the squad. The team continues its preparations despite the disruption caused by the coach’s health issue.
Romania heads into the fixture after suffering a defeat to Turkey on Thursday, a result that confirmed they will not participate in the upcoming World Cup.
