The Confederation of African Football is facing a difficult phase following the resignation of its general secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba. In a statement, he described his departure as a retirement, though it comes at a time when the organization is dealing with significant unrest linked to recent tournament decisions.

Among the issues affecting the governing body are the removal of Senegal’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and the last-minute postponement of the women’s competition. These developments have contributed to growing doubts about Caf’s leadership and decision-making.

In his remarks, Mosengo-Omba referenced the challenges he encountered while in office, stating that he could now leave without pressure after addressing allegations made against him. He also expressed confidence that the organization is in a stronger position following his tenure.

Criticism and internal scrutiny

Mosengo-Omba, who served as deputy to Caf president Patrice Motsepe, had faced criticism for remaining in his role beyond the body’s official retirement age of 63. At 66, his continued presence drew attention within the organization.

Additionally, some staff members accused him of fostering a difficult working environment. However, an internal investigation launched after complaints were filed cleared him of wrongdoing. Despite this outcome, the allegations contributed to the wider tensions surrounding Caf’s administration.

Originally appointed in March 2021, Mosengo-Omba, who is from the Democratic Republic of Congo and also holds Swiss nationality, played a central role in the organization during a period marked by both structural and competitive challenges.

Afcon final dispute and ongoing appeal

The controversy surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations final remains unresolved, with Caf awaiting a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport regarding Senegal’s appeal. The case stems from the decision to strip Senegal of their victory over Morocco.

During the final, Senegal’s players temporarily left the pitch in protest after Morocco was awarded a stoppage-time penalty while the score was level. Following a delay of around 17 minutes, play resumed, Morocco missed the penalty, and Senegal later secured a winning goal in extra time.

After an appeal from the Moroccan Football Federation, Caf overturned the result, declaring Senegal to have forfeited the match and awarding Morocco a 3-0 win. As the situation develops, Caf’s competitions director, Samson Adamu, is expected to step in as acting general secretary.
