Jordan Henderson has expressed support for Ben White after the defender was jeered by supporters during England’s friendly draw with Uruguay at Wembley on Friday. White experienced a challenging return, despite marking the occasion by putting his team ahead.

The 28-year-old made his first international appearance since leaving the England squad during the 2022 World Cup for what was described as personal reasons. Reports indicated the exit followed a disagreement with the coaching staff led by Gareth Southgate.

New head coach Thomas Tuchel offered White another opportunity, but his time on the pitch proved eventful. He was booed upon replacing Fikayo Tomori, received further negative reaction after scoring, and later conceded a penalty that allowed Federico Valverde to secure a draw for Uruguay.

Henderson draws on personal experience

Henderson acknowledged that dealing with criticism from the stands is part of representing England, recalling his own experience of being booed after his move to Saudi Arabia in 2023. He emphasized that players within the squad remain united and supportive of one another during such moments.

He suggested that some supporters may react based on narratives they hear, rather than a full understanding of the situation. According to Henderson, much of what is discussed publicly does not always reflect reality, particularly regarding events surrounding the World Cup in Qatar.

The midfielder stressed that certain matters are handled internally within the team, and that outsiders are not always aware of the full context behind decisions or incidents.

England squad rallies around White

Henderson praised White’s performances since rejoining the national setup, highlighting the importance of backing him as a teammate. He noted that several players have faced similar situations and understand how difficult it can be to deal with such reactions.

He explained that external narratives can influence public opinion, sometimes unfairly, and that this can make things harder for players involved. Ensuring White feels supported within the group, Henderson added, is a priority.

Despite the mixed reception, Henderson was pleased to see White return to action and find the net, underlining that his contribution on the pitch remains what matters most.
