Wales suffer penalty heartbreak as Bosnia edge a 4-2 shootout win after a 1-1 draw to reach the World Cup play-off final against Italy.
Wales saw their World Cup dream slip away in cruel fashion after a penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Cardiff. The semi-final ended 1-1 after extra time before the visitors prevailed 4-2 on penalties. It marked another painful exit for Wales, who were just minutes away from victory in normal time. Instead, they must now pick up the pieces after another near miss on the big stage.
The home side began with confidence and dominated possession in the first half. They controlled the tempo but struggled to create clear-cut chances. Bosnia sat deep, committed fouls, and slowed the game whenever possible.
Wales came closest midway through the half when Harry Wilson curled an effort onto the post. The crowd sensed a breakthrough, but Bosnia held firm. Despite enjoying around 70 percent possession, Wales went into the break level at 0-0.
Wales made their pressure count shortly after the restart. A defensive error allowed Daniel James to pounce in the 51st minute. He unleashed a powerful strike from distance that flew into the net. The goal lifted the tempo as both sides became more open. James nearly doubled the lead later, but his effort struck the crossbar. Wales pushed forward, searching for a decisive second goal.
Bosnia gradually grew into the contest and created chances of their own. Goalkeeper Karl Darlow made an outstanding save to deny Ermedin Demirovic. However, Wales could not hold on. In the 86th minute, Edin Dzeko rose highest to head home from a corner. The equaliser stunned the home crowd and forced the game into extra time at 1-1.
Both teams looked fatigued in extra time, with chances limited. Wales came closest through a late attacking move, but no one applied the finishing touch. Bosnia appeared content to take the contest to penalties. The shootout began with a moment of hope for Wales. Darlow saved Bosnia’s opening kick, giving his side an early advantage. Wilson and Mark Harris converted calmly to keep Wales ahead.
However, momentum shifted quickly. Brennan Johnson fired his effort over the bar, and Bosnia responded with composure. Neco Williams then saw his penalty saved, leaving Wales on the brink.
Kerim Alajbegovic stepped up and converted the decisive kick, sealing a 4-2 shootout victory for Bosnia.
Wales created more chances across the game and registered 19 shots with an expected goals figure of 1.19. Bosnia managed 14 attempts and an xG of 1.02, highlighting a closely contested tie. James was Wales’ standout performer, scoring and hitting the bar. Darlow also impressed with key saves, including during the shootout.
For Bosnia, Dzeko once again proved decisive with a crucial late goal.
The result continues a difficult trend for Wales, who have now failed to beat Bosnia in five meetings. It also marks another penalty heartbreak following their Euro 2024 play-off exit.
Bosnia and Herzegovina will now host Italy in the play-off final for a place at the World Cup. Victory would secure their first appearance at the tournament since 2014.
Wales, meanwhile, must quickly recover as they prepare to face Northern Ireland in a friendly on Tuesday. While the loss will sting, attention now turns to future competitions and long-term progress.
