Struggling Sevilla sack Matias Almeyda after poor LaLiga form and appoint Luis Garcia Plaza to steer them clear of relegation danger.
Sevilla FC have sacked head coach Matias Almeyda following a disappointing run in LaLiga. The decision came after a 2-0 home defeat to Valencia CF. That result left Sevilla hovering just above the relegation zone.
The club sit 15th in the table with 31 points from 29 matches. They are only three points clear of danger with nine games remaining. Form has been a major concern, with just one win in their last eight league outings.
Almeyda had been in charge since June but struggled to deliver consistency. His tenure lasted 32 matches across all competitions. Sevilla recorded 10 wins, seven draws, and 15 defeats during that period.
Almeyda’s difficulties were not limited to results on the pitch. The Argentine coach was also serving a seven-match touchline ban. That suspension followed an incident involving a confrontation with a match official.
The ban meant he missed several key fixtures during a crucial phase of the season. It further disrupted Sevilla’s attempts to build momentum. Performances remained inconsistent throughout that spell.
Statistically, Almeyda’s record placed him among the least successful Sevilla managers in LaLiga history. His losing percentage of 48.3 percent ranks among the club’s worst. Only two managers have recorded a higher rate in the competition.
Sevilla moved quickly to appoint Luis Garcia Plaza as their new head coach. The 53-year-old has signed a contract until the end of next season. He arrives with extensive experience in Spanish football.
Garcia Plaza has managed 229 matches in LaLiga during his career. He has recorded 66 wins, 58 draws, and 105 defeats. That equates to an average of 1.12 points per game in the top flight.
His previous roles include spells at Villarreal, Mallorca, and Deportivo Alaves. He was last in charge of Alaves before leaving in December 2024. Sevilla will hope his experience proves decisive in the relegation battle.
The turning point came with the defeat against Valencia at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Sevilla struggled to create chances and looked vulnerable defensively. The performance reflected issues seen throughout recent weeks.
Earlier in the run, a 1-1 draw with Alaves also highlighted discipline problems. That match led to Almeyda’s suspension and increased pressure on the squad. Results failed to improve afterward.
Despite individual efforts from key players, the team lacked cohesion. Defensive lapses and missed chances became recurring themes. Those issues ultimately forced the club’s hierarchy to act.
Garcia Plaza’s first match in charge will come against bottom side Real Oviedo on April 5. That fixture presents an immediate opportunity to gain vital points. It will be followed by a tough home game against Atletico Madrid.
With nine matches remaining, every result will be crucial. Sevilla must quickly find form to avoid slipping into the relegation zone. The margin for error is extremely small.
The new coach has already called for unity and effort from players and supporters. Survival remains the primary objective for the rest of the campaign. Sevilla now face a defining stretch in their season.
