Paris Saint-Germain has formally requested to delay their upcoming Ligue 1 meeting with RC Lens, which is currently set between the two legs of their Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool FC. The Paris side are due to host Liverpool before travelling to Anfield, with the domestic fixture against Lens scheduled in the middle of that demanding European tie.
The match in question is planned for Saturday, 11 April, just three days after the first leg in Paris and three days before the return leg in England. Meanwhile, Liverpool are set to face Fulham FC in the Premier League on the same date.
Lens, who are currently second in the standings and only one point behind PSG, have reacted strongly against the possibility of postponement. In an official statement, the club criticized what they described as a concerning tendency to prioritize European commitments over domestic competition.
They argued that such decisions risk diminishing the importance of the league itself, suggesting that Ligue 1 could be treated as secondary to continental ambitions. The club emphasized that the issue goes beyond this single fixture, raising broader concerns about the respect and integrity of the competition.
A representative from PSG responded by stating that similar scheduling adjustments have been made regularly by the Ligue de Football Professionnel in the past to support French teams competing in Europe. According to the club, granting such requests does not undermine the domestic league.
They further highlighted that strong performances by French clubs in European tournaments benefit the national game overall. PSG pointed to France’s current sixth-place position in the UEFA coefficient rankings for the 2025–26 season as evidence of the wider impact.
Despite PSG’s stance, Lens head coach Pierre Sage made it clear after his team’s 5-1 victory over Angers SCO that his side does not support moving the fixture.
A similar situation occurred earlier in the season when PSG were involved in a Champions League tie against Chelsea FC. On that occasion, their league match against FC Nantes was postponed following a request, allowing the team to focus fully on European competition. PSG went on to win that tie convincingly, progressing 8-2 on aggregate.
The ultimate decision regarding the Lens fixture rests with the LFP, which has indicated a willingness to assist French clubs participating in European competitions when possible.
In a related development, RC Strasbourg have also asked for their league match against Stade Brestois 29 to be rescheduled. Their request is linked to Conference League fixtures against 1. FSV Mainz 05, scheduled around the same period.
