Fernandes inspires Man United win over Aston Villa

Manchester United strengthened their grip on third place in the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford. Goals from Casemiro, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko sealed an important result in the race for Champions League qualification.
The win moved United three points clear of Villa in the table. Michael Carrick’s side now sit firmly in third place with eight matches remaining.

Cagey first half at Old Trafford

The opening period lacked rhythm as both teams struggled to create clear chances. United controlled possession but found it difficult to break down Villa’s organised defence. Amad Diallo produced the first real opportunity midway through the half. The winger met a cross with a header, but Emiliano Martinez reacted quickly to push the effort away. Diogo Dalot later wasted a promising chance inside the penalty area. His shot flew over the bar after United worked the ball well down the flank.
Villa’s best moment before the break came through Ollie Watkins. The striker looked ready to shoot before Leny Yoro slid in with an important block. The teams went into halftime locked at 0-0 after a cautious first half.

Casemiro breaks the deadlock

The game finally sparked into life early in the second half. United took the lead in the 53rd minute from a well-delivered corner by Bruno Fernandes. Casemiro made a clever run to the near post and glanced his header across goal. The ball clipped the far upright and bounced into the net.
Villa responded well and found an equaliser 11 minutes later. Ross Barkley scored on his first Premier League start in 14 months, drilling a low shot into the bottom corner. The visitors briefly threatened to build momentum. However, United quickly regained control through the creativity of their captain.

United finish strongly

Fernandes once again provided the decisive moment in the 71st minute. The Portuguese midfielder slipped a precise through ball behind the Villa defence. Matheus Cunha raced onto the pass and calmly finished into the far corner. The goal restored United’s lead and shifted the momentum back to the hosts.
Carrick introduced Benjamin Sesko from the bench soon after. The striker continued his impressive scoring run with another late contribution. In the 81st minute, Sesko reacted quickly to a loose ball in the box. He turned sharply and fired a shot that deflected off Tyrone Mings and looped past Martinez.
The goal secured all three points and capped a strong second-half performance from United.

Key moments and standout performers

Bruno Fernandes delivered another influential display despite not scoring. He registered two assists and controlled much of United’s attacking play. His pass for Cunha’s goal was particularly impressive. It also marked his 100th assist for the club in all competitions.
Casemiro also stood out with a commanding performance in midfield. The Brazilian’s opener was his sixth headed league goal of the season. Sesko’s late strike continued his remarkable form. The forward now has eight goals in his last 10 appearances for United.

Numbers behind the victory

Fernandes’ assist tally reached 16 in the Premier League this season. That breaks the club record of 15 previously set by David Beckham in 1999-2000. United have also collected 22 points from nine league matches since Carrick took charge in January. No other Premier League side has earned more during that period. The victory extended United’s strong home run as well. Carrick has now overseen six consecutive league wins at Old Trafford.

What’s next

Manchester United return to Premier League action on Friday when they travel to Bournemouth. Carrick’s side will aim to strengthen their hold on a Champions League place. Aston Villa, meanwhile, face Lille in the Europa League before hosting West Ham in their next league match. Unai Emery’s team will be eager to halt a difficult run of results.
