Borussia Dortmund beat Augsburg 2-0 as Karim Adeyemi and Luca Reggiani score to cut Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga lead to nine points.
Borussia Dortmund secured an important 2-0 victory over Augsburg at Signal Iduna Park. The win helped Nico Kovac’s side reduce Bayern Munich’s lead at the top of the Bundesliga to nine points. Karim Adeyemi opened the scoring early before teenager Luca Reggiani sealed the result after the break. Dortmund controlled most of the contest and rarely allowed Augsburg clear chances.
Dortmund began with strong attacking intent and quickly pushed Augsburg deep inside their own half. Their pressure paid off in the 13th minute with the opening goal. Maximilian Beier worked space on the left and delivered a deflected cross into the penalty area. Adeyemi reacted quickly and fired the loose ball into the net from close range.
The goal lifted the home crowd and gave Dortmund confidence. Augsburg tried to respond with quick counterattacks but struggled to create meaningful opportunities.
The hosts continued to control possession and create chances before the interval. Beier nearly doubled the lead when his effort struck the crossbar. Moments later Adeyemi also rattled the woodwork after a flowing team move. Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen had to stay alert to keep his team in the match.
The visitors did threaten briefly when Rodrigo Ribeiro fired wide after a defensive mistake. Despite that scare, Dortmund went into the break deservedly ahead.
Dortmund resumed the second half with the same attacking energy. Augsburg were largely forced into defending as the hosts pressed forward. The decisive second goal arrived in the 59th minute from a set piece. Julian Ryerson delivered a precise corner into the penalty area.
Eighteen-year-old defender Luca Reggiani rose highest and powered a header into the net. It was his first senior goal for Dortmund and effectively sealed the three points.
Augsburg pushed forward in the final stages in search of a response. However, Dortmund’s defence remained organised and limited the visitors to few attempts. Dahmen continued to impress at the other end with important saves. He denied Adeyemi in a one-on-one situation before stopping substitute Serhou Guirassy late in stoppage time. The scoreline remained unchanged as Dortmund completed a comfortable victory.
Adeyemi once again proved decisive for Dortmund. The club has never lost a Bundesliga match when he scores, recording 17 wins and two draws in such games. Reggiani also enjoyed a historic evening. At 18 years and 64 days, he became the youngest Italian player to score in Bundesliga history.
Dortmund’s dominance was reflected in the statistics. They produced an expected goals total of 2.58 compared with Augsburg’s 0.78 and restricted the visitors to just seven shots.
The clean sheet was Dortmund’s 12th in the league this season, the highest total in the Bundesliga.
Dortmund will look to maintain momentum in their next Bundesliga match at home against Hamburg SV as they continue chasing Bayern Munich in the title race. With eight games remaining, the gap to the league leaders remains on nine points. Augsburg return home next weekend and will face Stuttgart at the WWK Arena as they attempt to bounce back from defeat.
