Bodo/Glimt beat Sporting 3-0 in the Champions League last-16 first leg as goals from Fet, Blomberg and Hogh extend their remarkable run.
Bodo/Glimt produced another memorable Champions League performance with a 3-0 victory over Sporting in the first leg of their last-16 tie. The Norwegian side dominated the contest at Aspmyra Stadion and moved within touching distance of the quarter-finals.
Goals from Sondre Fet, Ole Didrik Blomberg and Kasper Hogh secured a fifth consecutive win in the competition. The result extended a stunning run that has seen the club defeat several European heavyweights this season.
Sporting started brightly and created the first chance inside five minutes. Luis Suarez met a corner with a powerful effort that was deflected just over the bar. Bodo soon responded with their own attacking spell. Jens Petter Hauge volleyed narrowly wide after a clever pull-back from Hakon Evjen.
The hosts gradually began to control possession. Their energetic pressing forced Sporting onto the back foot, while Evjen tested goalkeeper Rui Silva from close range.
The game’s turning point arrived in the 32nd minute. Kasper Hogh produced a clever touch inside the penalty area before Georgios Vagiannidis barged into Sondre Fet. After a brief VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot. Fet stepped up confidently and sent Rui Silva the wrong way to give Bodo the lead.
The home side continued to press forward after the opener. Their patience in attack kept Sporting pinned deep for long spells.
Bodo strengthened their grip on the match just before half time. A deflected pass from Hauge fell kindly for Ole Didrik Blomberg inside the area. The winger showed great composure with his first touch before sliding a precise finish into the bottom corner in first-half stoppage time. The goal sparked loud celebrations among the 7,971 fans packed into Aspmyra Stadion. Bodo headed into the interval with a deserved 2-0 lead.
Sporting attempted to respond early in the second half. Suarez fired wide from the left side of the box while Francisco Trincao saw a powerful shot blocked. However, Bodo remained dangerous whenever they attacked. Their third goal arrived in the 71st minute following a swift move down the left.
Hauge delivered a dangerous low cross into the box. Hogh slipped between two defenders and steered the ball home from close range to make it 3-0.
Hauge was influential throughout the match, assisting the third goal and creating several dangerous attacks. Fet also impressed in midfield after scoring the opening penalty. Hogh’s strike marked his fifth Champions League goal of the campaign. That tally equals the record for a Danish player in a single season, previously set by Nicklas Bendtner and Rasmus Hojlund.
Bodo also produced strong numbers on the night. They generated an expected goals figure of 2.46 from 10 shots, while Sporting managed just 0.51 from nine attempts. The win made Bodo only the fifth club from outside Europe’s top five leagues to record five consecutive Champions League victories.
The second leg will take place at the Jose Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon next Tuesday. Sporting face a huge challenge as they attempt to overturn the three-goal deficit. Bodo/Glimt, meanwhile, will aim to complete their remarkable story and reach the quarter-finals. The winner of the tie will face either Arsenal or Bayer Leverkusen in the next round.
