Paris Saint-Germain suffered a surprising 3-1 defeat at home to AS Monaco. Despite the setback, the champions remain four points clear at the top of Ligue 1. Monaco produced a sharp attacking display to secure an impressive victory at the Parc des Princes, opening the way for RC Lens to close the gap on leaders PSG.
Monaco began the match with greater urgency and nearly struck early. Denis Zakaria headed wide from a promising position during the opening minutes. Maghnes Akliouche also tested the PSG defence with a curling effort that drifted just past the post.
PSG struggled to impose their usual rhythm in midfield. Nuno Mendes produced the hosts’ first notable attempt, dragging a low effort wide from distance. The visitors looked more composed and continued to press high up the pitch.
The breakthrough arrived in the 27th minute after a costly mistake from the PSG defence. Warren Zaïre-Emery lost possession inside his own penalty area under pressure from Zakaria. Folarin Balogun reacted quickly and laid the ball into the path of Akliouche.
The young forward kept his composure and fired a close-range effort in off the post. Monaco deserved their lead after dominating the opening half hour. PSG struggled to respond and went into the break trailing 1-0.
Monaco extended their lead shortly after the restart. Aleksandr Golovin made an immediate impact after coming on as a substitute. The midfielder latched onto a precise pass inside the area and guided a low shot into the bottom corner.
The visitors almost scored again minutes later. Golovin unleashed a powerful strike from distance that forced Matvei Safonov into an excellent save. PSG were suddenly facing a serious uphill task in front of their home crowd.
PSG finally found a breakthrough in the 71st minute. Achraf Hakimi surged down the right flank and delivered a clever pass into the area. Bradley Barcola finished the move with a low effort that deflected into the net.
The goal briefly lifted the atmosphere inside the stadium. Luis Enrique’s side pushed forward in search of an equaliser. However, their momentum lasted only a short time.
Monaco restored their two-goal advantage almost immediately. Balogun collected the ball outside the penalty area and fired a powerful strike toward goal. The effort deflected off Nuno Mendes and looped beyond Safonov.
The visitors nearly added a fourth goal late on when Simon Adingra struck the crossbar. PSG could not create another clear chance and the match ended with Monaco celebrating a valuable away victory.
Akliouche delivered an energetic display and opened the scoring with confidence. Golovin also impressed after coming off the bench to score Monaco’s second goal. Balogun completed a strong performance with the decisive third goal.
Adamant defending and quick transitions allowed Monaco to control key moments of the match. For PSG, Barcola remained their brightest attacking threat and extended his recent scoring streak in the league.
PSG produced 1.09 expected goals during the match compared to Monaco’s 1.34. Despite the defeat, the Paris club remain top of Ligue 1 with a four-point lead over second-place RC Lens who play on Sunday.
The loss was PSG’s fourth league defeat of the season. Monaco’s victory also marked their fourth consecutive win in Ligue 1, lifting them to fifth place in the standings.
PSG will quickly shift focus to European competition. They host Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie next week.
Monaco will aim to continue their strong domestic form when they return to Ligue 1 action against Brest, Lyon and Marseille in their upcoming fixtures.
