
Ten-man Newcastle stun Manchester United 2-1 as substitute William Osula scores a stunning late winner to end Michael Carrick’s unbeaten run.
Newcastle United produced a spirited display to defeat Manchester United 2-1 at St James’ Park. Despite playing the entire second half with 10 men, Eddie Howe’s side refused to sit back. Substitute William Osula struck a superb winner in the 90th minute to secure a memorable Premier League victory.
The defeat ended Michael Carrick’s unbeaten start as United manager. Newcastle climbed to 12th place, while United remain third in the table.
Newcastle began brightly and nearly scored inside three minutes. Kieran Trippier’s cross clipped the far post before Lewis Hall fired the rebound over the bar. The hosts continued to create chances during the early exchanges. Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes both came close with efforts from outside the area.
Manchester United gradually settled into the contest. Aaron Ramsdale produced a strong save to deny Kobbie Mainoo. Bryan Mbeumo also missed a huge chance after blasting over from close range.
The match exploded into life in first-half stoppage time. Newcastle midfielder Jacob Ramsey received a second yellow card after referee Peter Bankes ruled he had dived while attempting to win a penalty. The decision left the home crowd furious and reduced the Magpies to ten men.
Despite the setback, Newcastle struck first moments later. Anthony Gordon was brought down inside the area by Bruno Fernandes after bursting into the box. Gordon stepped up confidently and smashed the penalty straight down the middle in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
Manchester United responded quickly before the break. Fernandes delivered a dangerous free-kick into the area. Casemiro timed his run perfectly and headed past Ramsdale to make it 1-1 in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
The dramatic sequence meant both sides went into half-time level despite Newcastle’s red card.
The second half was expected to favour United with the extra player. However, Newcastle showed remarkable energy and organisation. Gordon nearly restored the lead when he fired narrowly wide at the back post after a corner.
United eventually began to apply pressure. Ramsdale made a brilliant save to keep out a powerful header from Leny Yoro. The Newcastle goalkeeper also produced an excellent stop to deny substitute Joshua Zirkzee late in the match.
Despite enjoying more possession, United struggled to break down the determined hosts.
Newcastle found their decisive moment right at the end. In the 90th minute, Trippier released substitute William Osula down the right flank. The Danish forward cut inside Tyrell Malacia before curling a superb shot into the far corner.
The strike sparked wild celebrations among the home supporters. It was Osula’s first league goal since September and his only shot of the match.
Several Newcastle players produced standout performances in a demanding game. Ramsdale delivered a series of vital saves during the second half. Gordon caused constant problems and scored from the penalty spot. Trippier also played a key role by providing the assist for the winning goal.
For United, Fernandes created the equaliser and remained their most creative outlet. Casemiro again demonstrated his aerial threat with another important goal.
Newcastle created the better chances across the match. The hosts finished with an expected goals total of 2.22 compared to United’s 1.28. Osula’s winner came from a chance worth only 0.06 xG.
The goal was also Newcastle’s third winning strike scored in the 90th minute or later this season. Manchester United, meanwhile, have now conceded eight last-minute winners in the Premier League over the past four campaigns.
Newcastle will host Manchester City in the FA Cup fifth round this weekend. They then face FC Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.
