Noureddine Ben Zekri has made a swift comeback to the Roshn Saudi League after being named Al Shabab’s head coach on Tuesday night. The Algerian tactician has signed on until the conclusion of the current campaign, stepping in for Imanol Alguacil.
Well known across Saudi Arabia’s top division for his ability to guide teams away from danger, Ben Zekri has carved out a reputation as a specialist in difficult situations. His animated touchline celebrations have also become a familiar sight.
Last term offered another example of his impact. He ensured newly promoted Al Kholood preserved their status in the league, with the Ar Rass side ultimately securing an impressive ninth-place finish.
Ben Zekri’s success in steering teams clear of the bottom places stretches beyond Al Kholood. During the 2023-24 season, he led Al Okhdood to safety, once again celebrating survival in his characteristic fashion.
Similar rescue acts came earlier in his Saudi journey with Damac, Al Raed, and Al Fayha. Time and again, he has been called upon when clubs find themselves hovering near the relegation zone.
Now he inherits an Al Shabab side sitting 14th after 21 rounds of matches, just six points above the drop line. Although the 2011-12 league champions managed back-to-back victories late last month, consecutive defeats — away to Al Kholood and then a 5-2 home loss against Al Ahli — prompted change.
With the threat of a relegation battle looming, the club’s hierarchy turned to a familiar figure capable of handling high-pressure circumstances.
Speaking to the club’s official channel following his appointment, Ben Zekri expressed gratitude and enthusiasm for the opportunity. He described Al Shabab as a historic institution and voiced pride at taking charge.
He underlined his commitment to hard work, acknowledging the competitiveness of the Roshn Saudi League and stressing the need to deliver strong results.
His first challenge arrives quickly. On Friday, Al Shabab travels to Abha to face Damac, a side positioned directly beneath them in the standings — a fixture that already carries major significance in the fight to remain clear of danger.
