Atletico Madrid beat Mallorca 3-0 at home as goals from Sorloth, an own goal and Almada lifted Simeone’s side into third in LaLiga.
Atletico Madrid climbed to third in LaLiga after a controlled 3-0 home win over Mallorca on Sunday, keeping pressure on the teams above them. Goals from Alexander Sorloth, a David Lopez own goal and a late Thiago Almada strike settled the contest at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano stadium.
Diego Simeone’s side moved onto 44 points, leapfrogging Villarreal into third and sitting three points clear of their rivals. Real Madrid remain top on 51 points, with Barcelona two behind and holding a game in hand. Mallorca stay 17th on 21 points, hovering just above the relegation places after another difficult afternoon.
Atletico set the tone early and monopolised possession, forcing Leo Roman into action inside the opening ten minutes. Roman denied Sorloth from close range before reacting sharply to smother Giuliano Simeone’s follow-up. The breakthrough arrived in the 22nd minute when Marcos Llorente’s volley was parried, allowing Sorloth to convert the rebound.
Atletico remained on the front foot after the interval, with Pablo Barrios testing Roman from distance. David Hancko also went close as Mallorca struggled to escape sustained pressure. The second goal arrived in the 75th minute when Llorente’s low cross was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Lopez.
Mallorca offered brief resistance late on, but Atletico always looked in control of the scoreline. Substitute Thiago Almada ended any doubt in the 87th minute with a superb curling finish into the top corner. The Argentine’s composure capped a dominant display and underlined Atletico’s growing depth.
Sorloth again led the line effectively, scoring for the third consecutive league match. Llorente was influential throughout, providing energy, width and the decisive cross for the own goal. Behind them, Atletico’s defence limited Mallorca to few clear chances and maintained structure.
The win extended Atletico’s unbeaten run in all competitions to four matches, easing concerns after a mixed spell. Consistency at home is becoming a key weapon as Simeone looks to sustain a title push. While Real Madrid and Barcelona remain the benchmarks, Atletico’s recent form has tightened the race. Dropping points is no longer an option as the calendar intensifies across competitions.
Atletico recorded 17 shots to Mallorca’s six and finished with an expected goals total of 1.48. Mallorca managed an xG of just 0.46, reflecting their limited attacking threat. Simeone’s side have now won ten straight LaLiga matches at home. Atletico also dominated possession and completed more passes in the final third, highlighting territorial control. Such metrics reflected their authority and explained the comfortable nature of the victory.
The home crowd responded with a confident atmosphere throughout. It underpinned another assured afternoon in Madrid.
Atletico turn their attention to Europe next, facing Bodo Glimt in the Champions League before returning to domestic action against Levante. In LaLiga, Simeone’s side will aim to extend their home run as they chase the top two. Upcoming fixtures against mid-table opposition offer a chance to build momentum, though rotation may be required. Squad management will be crucial as minutes accumulate and margins at the top remain fine. Mallorca host Sevilla next weekend.
