Tottenham fear Lucas Bergvall could miss up to three months after suffering an ankle injury against Dortmund, deepening Spurs’ growing injury crisis.
Tottenham Hotspur are awaiting a final diagnosis on Lucas Bergvall’s ankle injury, with early fears he could miss up to three months. The 19-year-old was hurt during Tuesday night’s 2-0 Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund. Bergvall attempted to play on before being substituted in the second half. Spurs medics are continuing their assessments before confirming the severity.
The Sweden international had been one of Tottenham’s brighter performers this season. He has made 26 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring once and providing four assists. Since his arrival from Djurgarden arrival in the summer 2024, he has featured in 71 games, scoring twice and providing eight assists. Any lengthy absence would be another significant blow for head coach Thomas Frank. Spurs have already struggled for continuity during a difficult campaign.
Bergvall picked up the problem following a heavy challenge after the interval against Dortmund. He received treatment on the pitch but was unable to continue at full intensity. Initial checks raised concerns over a potential high ankle sprain. The club have not yet provided a firm return date.
Frank confirmed after the match that the midfielder was being closely monitored. He stopped short of offering a timetable but admitted it “could be a longer one”. A three-month layoff is considered the worst-case scenario at this stage. Further tests are expected to clarify the picture.
Tottenham’s injury situation continues to worsen at a critical point in the season. James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski and Ben Davies are all sidelined long term. Richarlison is not expected back for another six weeks due to a thigh problem. Joao Palhinha is also nursing a knock.
The absences have played a major role in Spurs’ struggles in the Premier League. They currently sit 14th after a disappointing first half of the campaign. Frank has regularly been forced to reshuffle his midfield options. Bergvall’s potential absence only adds to that challenge.
Despite domestic frustration, Spurs found encouragement in Europe this week. The win over Dortmund eased some of the pressure on Frank. Tottenham are currently fifth in the Champions League standings. Automatic qualification for the last 16 remains within reach.
Bergvall had been growing into a key role in these European fixtures. His energy and composure have stood out in midfield. Losing him for a prolonged spell would reduce Spurs’ rotation options. It would also increase the load on several returning players.
Tottenham return to Premier League action on Saturday with a trip to Burnley. They then face Eintracht Frankfurt in their final Champions League league phase fixture. Frankfurt sit near the bottom of the table after a poor European run. Spurs know another positive result could secure their progress.
Much will depend on how quickly injured players can return. Bergvall’s status will be watched closely over the coming days. For now, Tottenham are bracing themselves for another testing period.
