PSG ordered to pay Mbappe €60m after court ruling on salary dispute

PSG must pay Kylian Mbappe €60m in unpaid salary and bonuses after a French labour court ruling, with the club considering an appeal.

Paris Saint Germain have been ordered to pay Kylian Mbappe €60m in unpaid salary and bonuses. The ruling was delivered by a Paris labour court on Tuesday. It brings a major development in a dispute that has lasted more than two years. Mbappe left PSG in the summer of 2024 on a free transfer. He joined Real Madrid after seven seasons in the French capital. The case centered on money owed during the final months of his contract.

Court ruling explained

The court found PSG failed to pay Mbappe for three months. Those months covered April, May and June 2024. An ethics bonus and a signing bonus were also included. Mbappe had initially sought €263m in damages. The court awarded just over a fifth of that amount. Most of the €60m relates to bonuses rather than basic salary.
PSG had counter sued for up to €440m. The club argued it suffered losses when Mbappe left on a free transfer. That counter claim was rejected in full.

Reaction from Mbappe’s camp

Mbappe’s legal team welcomed the verdict. They said it confirmed a simple principle of labour law. Commitments must be honoured regardless of status. His lawyer Frederique Cassereau said the ruling was expected. She stressed salaries had gone unpaid. The decision followed earlier rulings from French football authorities. Mbappe’s representatives added he fulfilled all contractual duties. They said he remained professional until his final day. The judgement also dismissed claims of disloyal behaviour.

PSG response and possible appeal

PSG confirmed they will execute the ruling. The club also stated it reserves the right to appeal. An appeal would prolong a legal saga that both sides seem keen to close. In their statement PSG said they acted in good faith. They wished Mbappe well for the rest of his career. The club signalled a desire to move forward. The court also ordered PSG to publish the ruling on their website. It must remain visible for one month. That requirement underlines the weight of the decision.

How the dispute began

The relationship bfractured in 2023 when Mbappe refused to extend his deal. PSG feared losing him for nothing. A €300m move to Saudi side Al Hilal collapsed. Mbappe was left out of the club’s pre-season tour. He also missed the opening league game. PSG later reinstated him after talks. The club claimed Mbappe agreed verbally to waive bonuses. Mbappe’s camp denied any such agreement. The court found no written proof existed.

Numbers that define Mbappe’s PSG era

Mbappe scored 256 goals in 308 games for PSG. He won 15 trophies with the club. He remains their all-time leading scorer. In his final season he scored 44 goals in 48 matches. PSG went on to win the Champions League without him. The timing added to the tension.

What’s next

PSG play Flamengo on Wednesday December 17th in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. Luis Enrique’s will be back in action this weekend when they play Fontenay in the Coupe de France. They resume Ligue 1 action on January 4th when they host FC Paris as they continue their title defence.
Mbappe is preparing with Real Madrid for their match when they travel to CF Talavera on Wednesday December 17th in the Copa del Rey. Their next La Liga match will be at home against Sevilla on December 20th. Mbappe has been in fine form for Madrid and he will be focusing on helping Madrid cut the gap to league leaders Barcelona while also targeting Champions League progress.
