Inter Milan beat Lazio 2-0 at San Siro, with Lautaro Martinez and Ange-Yoan Bonny on target as Cristian Chivu’s men moved top of Serie A.
Inter Milan climbed to the top of Serie A with a convincing 2-0 victory over Lazio at San Siro. The Nerazzurri started fast and never looked back, earning their third straight league win under Cristian Chivu.
It took just three minutes for the home side to strike. Alessandro Bastoni dispossessed Gustav Isaksen on the left before squaring for Lautaro Martinez, who rifled a first-time shot into the top corner past Ivan Provedel. The early goal set the tone for a commanding performance by Inter, who dictated possession and tempo throughout the first half.
Lazio struggled to settle. Mattia Zaccagni fired their best first-half chance over the bar, while Petar Sucic narrowly missed the target after a slick counter from Inter.
Inter remained in control after the break, continuing to press Lazio high up the pitch. The visitors briefly threatened through Matteo Guendouzi, whose low strike forced Yann Sommer into a smart save. But it was Inter who struck again to seal the result.
In the 61st minute, Federico Dimarco delivered a perfect low cross from the left, and Ange-Yoan Bonny tapped home from close range to make it 2-0. It was the young forward’s second goal of the season and a reflection of Inter’s attacking fluidity.
Minutes later, Inter thought they had a third when Piotr Zielinski found the bottom corner. However, VAR ruled the goal out for a Dimarco handball in the build-up, denying the hosts a more emphatic scoreline.
Inter’s defensive solidity was as impressive as their attacking play. Sommer commanded his box with authority, denying Luca Pellegrini late on. The crossbar also came to Inter’s rescue when Oliver Provstgaard’s header struck the woodwork and bounced clear.
Martinez’s opener ended a four-game goal drought in Serie A. The Argentine now has 10 league goals this year and seven career goals against Lazio. His link-up play with Bonny and Dimarco was a constant menace for the Biancocelesti backline.
Bonny’s positioning and composure highlighted why Chivu has continued to trust the 20-year-old. Meanwhile, Bastoni and Nicolò Barella impressed in transition, ensuring Lazio rarely broke through midfield.
Both teams recorded eight shots, but Inter’s attacking quality told, producing an expected goals (xG) value of 1.91 to Lazio’s 0.63. Inter also dominated possession at 54% and completed over 90% of their 559 passes, emphasizing their control of the contest.
The win lifted Inter to 24 points after 11 matches, level with Roma but ahead on goal difference. Lazio remain in mid-table after failing to register a win in four of their last six league outings.
Inter head into the November international break at the top of Serie A, brimming with confidence and momentum. Chivu’s men will resume action with a crucial away fixture against rivals Ac Milan on November 23rd. Inter then travel to Spain to play Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on November 26th.
Lazio, meanwhile, return to the capital to face Lecce at the Stadio Olimpico, hoping to rediscover form and tighten their defense after another frustrating defeat.
