Olympique Marseille delivered a dominant performance to move top of Ligue 1 after a convincing 3-0 home victory over Brest at the Orange Vélodrome.
Goals from Angel Gomes, Mason Greenwood, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sealed the win for Roberto De Zerbi’s side, who looked sharp and composed from the opening whistle.
The hosts controlled possession and tempo throughout, producing one of their most complete league performances of the season. The victory marked their eighth Ligue 1 win, taking them a point above Paris Saint-Germain, who face Lyon on Sunday.
Angel Gomes gave Marseille the lead in the 25th minute with a curling free-kick that slipped through Brest goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki’s hands.
It was a fortunate moment for Gomes but fully deserved after a strong start that saw Marseille press high and pin Brest deep in their half.
The English midfielder, a summer signing from Lille, has now scored in back-to-back Ligue 1 matches and continues to impress under De Zerbi’s attacking system.
Just eight minutes later, Marseille doubled their lead.
Pierre-Emile Højbjerg was brought down inside the box, and Mason Greenwood stepped up to calmly convert the penalty. His composed finish wrong-footed Majecki and gave Marseille breathing room before halftime.
Greenwood, who has scored eight league goals this campaign, looked lively throughout and linked well with Gomes and Højbjerg on the right flank.
In the second half, Marseille continued to dictate play and looked determined to extend their lead. Their efforts paid off in the 81st minute when Matt O’Riley sent in a precise cross from the right wing.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang met it with a well-placed header at the near post, sealing a comfortable victory in front of 66,000 fans.
The Gabonese forward has now scored four league goals this season, rediscovering form at a crucial time for Marseille’s title challenge.
Marseille finished with 64 percent possession and created 3.46 expected goals (xG) from 19 shots.
Brest managed just three efforts on target with an xG of 0.74 as they struggled to cope with Marseille’s pace and pressing. Højbjerg and Greenwood were the standout players, while Gomes’ creativity in midfield drew applause from fans.
For Brest, Hugo Magnetti worked tirelessly in midfield, but the visitors lacked cohesion and struggled to build meaningful attacks.
The win sees Marseille rise to first place in Ligue 1 with 25 points, one clear of PSG.
Roberto De Zerbi’s men now turn their attention to a tricky away fixture against Nice on November 21st. Four days later, they host Newcastle in a crucial Champions League tie.
Meanwhile, Brest will look to bounce back when they face Metz at home after the international break.
