Al Qadsiah continue to build momentum under new head coach Brendan Rodgers, but the Northern Irishman is resisting any suggestion that his side are already genuine contenders for the Roshn Saudi League crown.
Speaking after Wednesday’s emphatic 5-0 home success against Al Fayha, Rodgers stressed the importance of perspective despite another dominant display. He highlighted the squad’s positive response to his methods and their willingness to embrace a bold approach in possession.
The latest win marked a fourth in a row and underlined the impact Rodgers has made since replacing Michel last month. His tenure began with a 1-1 draw against Damac, followed by victories over Al Shabab, Al Riyadh, Al Nassr, and now Al Fayha.
As Matchweek 16 approaches, Al Qadsiah occupies fifth place in the standings. They are just one point shy of second position, though leaders Al Hilal remain eight points clear at the summit.
Rodgers was quick to emphasise that the campaign still has a long distance to run. His focus, he explained, remains on steady progress and consistent development rather than league positions at this stage.
One of the most noticeable changes since the managerial switch has been in the final third. Al Qadsiah have struck 14 times across their last four league outings, an average that represents a sharp increase on their output earlier in the season.
Rodgers acknowledged that improving goal production was a priority upon his arrival. While the side already possessed defensive resilience, the challenge was to add greater cutting edge without losing stability.
The display against Al Fayha offered the clearest illustration yet of that balance. Five goals at one end were matched by a clean sheet at the other, something the coach views as equally important.
He credited the team’s structure for allowing players to commit numbers forward while remaining secure defensively. Although satisfied with the early returns, Rodgers reiterated that there is still significant room for refinement.
Despite the encouraging signs, he remains cautious, insisting that continued hard work and learning will determine how far the team can go over the remainder of the season.
Another highlight of the midweek victory was the breakthrough moment for Eyad Houssa. The 19-year-old marked his Roshn Saudi League debut by scoring Al Qadsiah’s fourth goal with a well-taken half-volley.
Rodgers expressed particular pleasure at seeing a young academy product seize his chance on such an occasion. The goal, he said, reflected both the player’s ability and his attitude in training.
The coach was later reminded of his role in nurturing Raheem Sterling during his early days at Liverpool. Sterling, introduced to senior football at a young age, went on to enjoy major success at the club and international level.
Rodgers explained that offering opportunities to emerging players has been a consistent theme throughout his career. With Eyad, he sees promising qualities and a mindset that merits trust.
While drawing no direct parallels with Sterling’s career path, Rodgers praised the teenager for making an encouraging first impression. He added that humility and a willingness to keep learning will be essential as the youngster looks to build on his opening step.
Al Qadsiah return to league action on Sunday with an away fixture against Al Hazem.
