Regragui rejects claims of Aguerd injury ahead of Mali test

Morocco manager Walid Regragui has pushed back against suggestions that central defender Nayef Aguerd is sidelined, insisting the West Ham player is available for selection against Mali on Friday in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Morocco manager Walid Regragui has pushed back against suggestions that central defender Nayef Aguerd is sidelined, insisting the West Ham player is available for selection against Mali on Friday in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Addressing journalists, Regragui questioned the origin of the rumours and stated firmly that Aguerd has been working normally in training without any physical issues. He emphasized that the squad is managing fitness carefully but clarified that Aguerd is not one of the concerns in that area at the moment.

However, the coach did concede that skipper Romain Saiss will be absent due to a muscular setback picked up during the victory over Comoros in their opening match of the championship.

Regragui also noted that Achraf Hakimi, recently named African Player of the Year, is returning from an ankle setback sustained at Paris Saint-Germain. He may be used sparingly depending on how staff evaluate his readiness.

“We will take the most sensible option for him,” said the coach, indicating a potential short appearance if conditions allow.

Praise for rising defensive prospect

Regragui also highlighted the progress of 19-year-old Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal, applauding his development and reiterating the long-term plan the staff holds for him.

The manager recalled selecting the young defender when he was still a reserve at Rennes and acknowledged that some had doubted the decision at the time. He suggested the current recognition Ait Boudlal is receiving validates the coaching team’s forward-thinking approach.

The national boss stressed that he intends to handle the teenager’s involvement prudently, ensuring he is not overwhelmed at this stage of his career.

While he has not confirmed whether Ait Boudlal will appear from kickoff or from the bench, he insisted the choice will reflect what is best for the player and the team.

Ait Boudlal himself stated that he and his teammates are aware of the demands they face and remain committed to implementing the technical guidance provided.

Qualification within reach

Morocco began their campaign with a 2-0 success over Comoros and are on the verge of progressing to the knockout rounds. A win over Mali at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat will secure their passage from Group A.

Regragui acknowledged the threat posed by Friday’s opposition, describing Mali as a formidable side capable of making the evening difficult.

He concluded by remarking that every clash in this competition brings its own challenges, and his squad must approach the encounter with focus and determination.
