Liverpool striker Alexander Isak faces months out after feared broken leg; scans pending

Liverpool coaches are afraid that their £125 million record signing, Alexander Isak, may be sidelined for months after suffering what looks like a serious lower-leg injury during Saturday’s 2-1 win at Tottenham.

Liverpool coaches are afraid that their £125 million record signing, Alexander Isak, may be sidelined for months after suffering what looks like a serious lower-leg injury during Saturday’s 2-1 win at Tottenham.

The Sweden international, who had come off the bench, scored the opening goal of the game, but was unable to celebrate as he went down clutching his left leg. The former Newcastle man had scored despite a sliding challenge by Spurs defender Micky van de Ven. Isak was substituted immediately.

Medical staff ordered scans on Sunday, with an MRI set to determine the extent of the damage and whether there is a fracture.

Early reports from club sources suggested Liverpool were “very concerned” about the severity of the injury and have been waiting for definitive imaging results before confirming how long the Swede will be out for.

Meanwhile, the word out is that the club is afraid that the tackle fractured Isak's lower leg while also suspecting an anterior cruciate ligament problem. Either issue would see Isak out for months rather than weeks.

Liverpool are exercising caution until they have the full medical report, but the mood around Anfield was described as gloomy after Isak — who has struggled with fitness since his summer move — did not attempt to return to play.

Liverpool have not issued a formal medical update beyond confirming scans are being carried out. In the meantime, transfer speculation have taken over the airwaves, with many media outlets already suggesting that the Reds will look to sign a backup, even if only temporary, in January.

The timing is also particularly problematic for manager Arne Slot and the squad. Mohamed Salah is away with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations; Cody Gakpo and other attacking options have had intermittent injury issues.

There might be a solution, however, as multiple sources are claiming that Antoine Semenyo of AFC Bournemouth will be happy to make the switch to Anfield.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have been in contact over the phone since November as they explore a potential move for Semenyo in 2026.

The Guardian reports that a switch to Anfield would be the 25-year-old's preference in January, while CaughtOffside have gone a step further to claim that both sides already have an agreement on the forward’s contract’s personal terms.

In the end, the club's finances will be the deciding factor, as their summer splurging will surely count towards their transfer budget for the immediate future.
