The proposed Nations League seeks to ensure regular, meaningful fixtures, promote competitive balance through tiered matchups, improve cost efficiency via centralized planning, and establish clearer progression pathways for teams at all levels.
In announcing the initiative, AFC General Secretary Datuk Seri Windsor John emphasized the dual benefits of the new competition. “The AFC Nations League represents an important step forward in our ongoing commitment to support the development of our 47 Member Associations,” he stated. He explained that the league would provide "greater calendar stability and clear sporting incentives," ensuring consistent access to high-quality matches.
