Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes has spoken openly about a move that almost took him away from Old Trafford and into the Saudi Pro League.
During the previous summer, the Portuguese midfielder attracted serious attention from Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad, both prepared to offer extraordinary financial terms.
One proposal would have earned Fernandes around £700,000 per week, adding up to close to £200 million across a three-year deal.
Despite the scale of the offers, the 31-year-old chose to remain in England, stressing that his attachment to United played a decisive role.
Speaking to Canal 11, Fernandes admitted the financial temptation was real but said walking away in that manner never felt right to him.
Fernandes explained that while he never forced an exit, he sensed that the club viewed his departure as acceptable if the price was right.
He said he could have followed a path taken by others by refusing to train or pushing for a transfer at a reduced fee but insisted he never considered acting that way.
According to the midfielder, his relationship with United was built on mutual respect and commitment, which made the situation emotionally difficult.
He told the club’s directors that he believed they were open to letting him go, adding that he felt they lacked the resolve to clearly decide his future.
That perception left a lasting mark, as Fernandes admitted he still carries the feeling that the club preferred the financial benefit over keeping him.
Ultimately, Fernandes stayed in Manchester due to family considerations, conversations with the manager, and his genuine affection for the club.
However, he acknowledged that sensing indifference from the club’s side caused deep disappointment rather than anger.
He stressed that his dedication has never wavered, pointing out that he is consistently available, plays regardless of circumstances, and always gives maximum effort.
Seeing teammates who, in his view, show less commitment yet remain at the club only added to his sadness.
Fernandes has recorded 103 goals and 93 assists across 307 appearances for United and intends to honor his contract, which runs until June 2027.
