Qatar’s national team wrapped up its current training camp with a 2-1 setback against Zimbabwe in a friendly match at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium. The game was designed as a final rehearsal ahead of the Arab Cup, which will take place in Qatar from December 1st to 18th.
The Maroons began brightly, taking the lead in the 9th minute through Mohamed Khalid. However, Zimbabwe quickly responded, with Munashe Peter equalizing in the 24th minute. Later, Bill Leroy struck in the 74th minute to secure the win for the visiting side.
Moments of promise for Qatar were evident throughout the match, yet defensive mistakes proved costly. Errors included a poorly defended corner and a miscue from the goalkeeper, which ultimately contributed to the defeat.
Despite the result, the match provided a useful opportunity to identify areas in need of improvement, particularly in defensive organization and decision-making under pressure.
Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui used the friendly primarily to evaluate the squad, giving opportunities to several young players and those called up from the training camp.
While he acknowledged the outcome was not favorable, Lopetegui stressed the importance of using the match as a tool for assessment. "It was a very important experience despite the loss, as it is part of our preparation for the upcoming challenges, chiefly the Arab Cup," he explained.
The match allowed the coaching staff to observe performances across different positions and test how players adapted to the national team’s tactics. This approach aims to help finalize the squad for the tournament and provide valuable minutes to emerging talent.
Lopetegui highlighted that giving game time to newer members of the squad is crucial for understanding team dynamics and readiness ahead of competitive fixtures.
Following the friendly, Qatar will continue its preparations for the Arab Cup once the tenth round of the Qatari League concludes.
Players involved with Al Sadd, Al Duhail, and Al Gharafa will also complete their Asian Champions League commitments before rejoining the national team.
The coaching staff intends to use the remaining training period to refine tactical approaches and strengthen cohesion across all units of the team.
